Write and flip is an activity that can be used for various purposes. We used it to do a reflection upon the workshop session. Otherwise it can also be used in creative processes to develop certain contents. Another example of use would be to give compliments/feedback to other team members (for longer existing groups, when the members already know each other).
You will need:
- papers
- pens
Time: 30 minutes (It can be shortened or extended depending on the group size.)
Group size: 5 – 20 participants
Step-by-step (of the reflection version)
1 – Explain to the participants that the paper will go around and each of them will write one line sharing the impressions on the session. They can write in any language and when it is finished, the group will together translate it in facilitating languages. When they receive the paper they read one line and then flip it around so it’s not visible anymore and write the next one.
2 – Explain that each of them should see just the last line (written by the person before them) and continue the narrative from there. If they don’t understand the language or don’t know the alphabet of what they see written, they can be inspired by it visually.
3 – When the circle is complete, ask participants, who would like to read the group reflection. The group reflection is read out loud. Ask the group if any translation is needed and do it together on a visible poster if the need is expressed.
Tips:
- In reflection adaptation only one paper travels around so there is one final group reflection gathered on it.
- For different purposes, each participant can get one paper and just circle all of them around until everyone writes a line on each of them.
- For example, if we would want to compliment/feedback other team members, the activity would start by writing our name on the top of the paper and pass it on, so each person in a circle would write a line about us and at the end, each person would receive a song/story/compilation about themselves.
